Is music a career for you? Is it part of what makes you you? Has music shaped the person you are, your dress, your attitudes, your lifestyle? Is music a refuge? Has music brought you and your friends together?

So many questions.........

I often wonder, I do. Is music the same for everyone? Not just in respect of the above questions but in the sounds themselves.

For a long time now I've thought I've heard more in music than many. Music takes me away. Music makes me the person I want to be. I mean, how many TV shows can get you sweating through your clothes and you don't care? How many books can turn a usually quiet person into a jumping, swaying, shouting, wild eyed crazy man, even if just for a few hours.

Music is my high. Music is my low. Music brings it all back with one melody then takes it all away with another.

Music is memory. My memories are in music. The time I got drunk and wandered across a field singing at the top of my lungs about 10 years ago, Carnt Be Trusted, The Bluetones. Seeing my friend sitting in a darkened room after returning from hospital after taking a sleeping pill overdose, Anna Begins, Counting Crows. My first fumble with a girlfriend, More Than Words, Extreme (yeah yeah I know). Quiet nights above my mates garage after too much cider, Albatros, Fleetwood Mac. As I type this my player is playing We Are Each Other by The Beautiful South. Another memory, Hinkley, visting an old friend.

Yet still I want music to be more. I want to make people understand. I want people to appreciate what I hear, how I feel, why. I want music to bring people back, to reunite.

Pull out an old CD, cassette, LP, something you've not heard in a while. Play it. Close your eyes. Feel. Remember.

Laugh, cry, dance, throw yourself about. It's all there in those few minutes of music, that collection of sounds that for some reason speaks to us.

The music is in us. Embrace it.
